VDH Roof Maintenance
Why choose a green roof ?
A green roof, also known as a sedum roof, offers several advantages. It provides insulation, keeping your home cooler in the summer and better at retaining heat in the winter. Furthermore, a sedum roof collects rainwater and drains it away slowly, reducing the burden on the sewer system – a major advantage, especially in a city like Rotterdam. The vegetation layer protects the underlying roof covering from UV rays and extreme weather conditions, extending the lifespan of your roof. Furthermore, you contribute to a better environment: a green roof promotes biodiversity, reduces heat stress, and improves air quality. In many cases, subsidies are available for the installation of a green roof.
How does installing a green sedum roof work?
Installing a green sedum roof always begins with a thorough roof inspection and assessment of its load-bearing capacity. Then, if necessary, a root barrier is applied to protect the roof structure. On top of that, a drainage and protective layer is applied to ensure proper drainage and sufficient water retention. As of January 1, 2020, Rotterdam has implemented a higher water retention capacity requirement of 30 liters per square meter to reduce the burden on the sewer system during heavy rainfall. We then apply a lightweight substrate layer as a growing medium for the plants and install the sedum mats or sedum cassettes. Thanks to this professional installation, the roof is optimally protected and requires minimal maintenance.
Sedum roof subsidy
The municipality of Rotterdam actively encourages the installation of green roofs through a subsidy program. If you own a home or business premises, you can apply for a subsidy to green your roof, garden, or facade. Green roofs help reduce flooding, extend the lifespan of your roof, and enhance the natural environment in the city. Rotterdam already boasts over 462,000 m² of green roofs.
The subsidy is intended, among other things, to create roofs with sufficient water retention capacity and is particularly important in densely populated neighborhoods. Combining solar panels also offers additional benefits, as solar panels on a green roof often achieve a higher yield.
More information about the conditions and current amounts can be found on the official page of the municipality of Rotterdam
We are happy to help you check the technical requirements and can support you with the subsidy application.

Frequently asked questions about Green roofs
To help you get started, we answer the most frequently asked questions about sedum roofs below.
On average, between €45 and €100 per m² (including installation). However, this varies greatly from roof to roof. Feel free to contact us, and we'll visit your home free of charge and provide a price estimate.
A completely water-saturated sedum roof weighs an average of 60 to 80 kilograms per square meter. Most flat roofs on houses, sheds, and extensions can support this weight, but if in doubt, it's wise to check the load-bearing capacity.
A sedum roof requires little maintenance. Checking it once or twice a year is usually sufficient. This involves removing unwanted plants and checking the drainage system for proper function.
With professional installation and proper maintenance, a sedum roof can last forty to sixty years. Because the vegetation layer protects the roof covering from the elements, the underlying roof layer often remains in good condition for longer.
For small areas, you can install it yourself, but proper construction is essential to prevent leaks or subsidence. As roofers, we ensure professional installation and a warranty on the system. To ensure your roof is installed safely and sustainably, you can schedule an appointment through our contact page.
A sedum roof normally doesn't need to be watered. Only during prolonged dry spells, especially in the first year after installation, is additional watering advisable to prevent dehydration.
A sedum roof is ideally installed in spring or autumn, when temperatures are mild and the plants can establish well. Installation is possible as long as it's not freezing or extremely hot. To find out if your roof is suitable, contact us for an inspection.
A sedum roof is usually fertilized once a year, preferably in the spring. This ensures healthy growth and strong vegetation. We can take care of this maintenance for you if desired.
The best periods are March to June and September to November. These months give plants the best start. You can easily schedule an appointment for advice or a free quote via our contact page.
